Kristin Dontigney, Suzanne Guillebeau, Candice Ahrens and Lynn Perigard started a book club last year, but this is no ordinary reading group. First of all, the four women do not read individually and discuss the stories once a month; they get together on a daily basis and read aloud. Secondly, they’re not holding their meetings around a coffee table; they’re doing their reading in a car! They’re a carpooling book club, and they call themselves the “Rolling Readers.”
Kristin joined Suzanne and Candice’s carpool back in June 2007, and as a threesome, the ‘pool qualified for Carpool Rewards, the incentive program that rewards carpools with gas cards on a monthly basis. A year later, Lynn joined the group, and the four women realized amazing savings on gas during their 36-mile daily commute.
“We each only drive one week a month now, and with the prizes we win occasionally through Commuter Prizes, it pays for itself,” said Kristin.
But the benefits of their carpool don’t stop there. After months of chit chatting about this and that, Suzanne came up with the idea of starting a mini book club to enrich the mind during their daily commute.
“It is a great way to read new books that were recommended by someone else and may not be something we would normally read,” said the members of the Rolling Readers. “We have read three books so far. Some turned out to be fantastic and one, we all agreed, was just okay.”
Suzanne and Kristin take turns reading when they’re not doing the driving, but they all concur that turning their commute into a club helps the time in the car fly by. Plus, they’re doing their part to keep 540 pounds of pollution out of the air every week.
Why don’t you try turning your commute into a club? Teach knitting in your vanpool. Get some coworkers together and bike to the office as a group. Do as the Rolling Readers did and start your own book club on wheels. Plus reap the benefits of Commuter Rewards, less traffic and cleaner air.
