Thanks to the employers and commuters across Georgia who gave their support to the second-annual Georgia Telework Week.
From employer testimonials to an informative Georgia Telework Summit, this event succeeded at bringing attention to the tremendous potential for telework in Georgia to boost economic productivity, reduce traffic, improve air quality and save money.
Four big takeaways from 2011 Georgia Telework Week:
- While there are already more than 600,000 teleworkers in metro Atlanta and more across Georgia, there is tremendous potential to further grow telework statewide. At least 245,000 more commuters would telework if their employers established a program.
- Georgia is among the most wired areas in the nation, giving us a competitive advantage for telework over other major metropolitan areas. Due to our changing workforce and technology, more jobs today can be accomplished remotely.
- Atlanta has some of the worst commutes in the country, with lost productivity of more than $2.7B annually due to traffic. In contrast, studies show that employees who telework can be as much as 20% more productive than their office-based counterparts.
- In many areas across Georgia, more than half of all smog-forming emissions come from the tailpipes of cars. Teleworking is a highly cost-effective pollution strategy, as each mile not driven to the office represents another pound of pollution not emitted into our air.
