Major Road Projects
Summer is here, and that means the busiest construction time of the year is underway. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has 33 major construction projects planned for this summer. There are several road construction and maintenance projects in progress, with many more scheduled to begin in the next few months, and we want to make sure commuters and vacationers can get to their destinations with the fewest delays and the least amount of congestion. GDOT’s Roadworks 2011 is a statewide effort to preserve and maintain one of Georgia’s best investments: our roads.
An estimated $403 million worth of major projects and many millions more in smaller work will be in progress this summer. Many of these projects will require lane closures that will likely result in traffic delays on interstate and state highways across Georgia. Affected major roadways include:
- I-16
- I-185
- I-20
- I-285
- I-575
- I-675
- I-75
- I-85
GDOT will attempt to minimize the impact on motorists by restricting some lane closures to nights and weekends when possible. Additionally, interstate work will be suspended during the Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day holiday weekends.
For a full list and map of construction projects, visit the Roadworks 2011 website, which will monitor the status of projects throughout the summer.
