6th Grade

Climate Change in My City
Students use an historical climate index to analyze climate change at local, regional, and global scales to describe how global temperature has changed over the last 100 years.

Indoor Air Pollution in Developing Countries
Students learn about indoor air quality in developing countries and how to lessen the impact on the environment using alternative fuels. The class discusses common pollutants found in the home and creates a poster on cause, effect and solutions to address the problem of poor indoor air quality.

Is Spring Coming Earlier?
Students investigate global warming and work in small groups, acting as "organizations" concerned with the trends in global warming, to research and propose solutions for restricting greenhouse gases.

What Do Light Bulbs Have to Do With Air Pollution?
Students conduct a home energy audit and calculate the impact of energy conservation where they live.

7th Grade

Every Breath You Take
After learning the part of the respiratory system, students make a working lung model, then modify it to demonstrate air pollution-induced health effects.

Lung Power and Air Pollution
Students decipher the Air Quality Index (AQI) by analyzing data, building a device to measure lung capacity and comparing results between days with good and bad air quality.

8th Grade

Indoor Air Pollution in Developing Countries
Students learn about indoor air quality in developing countries and how to lessen the impact on the environment using alternative fuels. The class discusses common pollutants found in the home and creates a poster on cause, effect and solutions to address the problem of poor indoor air quality.

National Monuments and Frequent Makeovers
In this experiment, students will observe how, when acids and metals come in contact with each other, the metal is gradually dissolved away in a chemical reaction.

Properties of Air
Students explore by building air cannons, heating air-filled ballons, separating hydrogen and oxygen from water, observing air as it is released from plants and testing for the presence of carbon dioxide.
