9th Grade
Air Pollution 101
Students will learn about the basics of air pollution, the seven main pollutants and their sources.
Air Quality Index
This lesson focuses on the Air Quality Index: what pollutants are monitored, how it is calculated, the AQI chart and reporting, and what the AQI levels mean for public health.
Clean Air Act – Do You Agree Or Disagree?
Students will learn about The Clean Air Act and the pros and cons of air pollution regulations.
Climate Change and Air Pollution
This lesson focuses on climate change - what it is, how we know it is happening, and the causes.
Costs of Air Pollution
This lesson focuses on the economic or internal costs of air pollution, as well as the hidden or external costs, including health and environmental costs of air pollution. The PowerPoint presentation concludes with a brief overview of some economic principles and a short discussion of full-cost pricing as a part of “environmental economics.”
Energy and Air Pollution
Students will learn about energy uses, resources, and the effect of energy production on air pollution.
Green Music Scene
Students will research some popular bands and musicians to learn how they are working to “green their tours” and reduce their ecological footprint. Students will also develop a short public service announcement (PSA) video to raise awareness about an environmental issue.
Green Teen Driver
Students will compare various “green” features when purchasing a car and understand some alternative fuels that are available in today’s market.
Indoor Air Pollution
Students will gain background knowledge regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) and will then explore EPA’s interactive Indoor Air Quality House, which presents rooms of a house, potential sources of indoor pollutants, and solutions.
Life Cycle of Your Athletic Shoe
Students will understand that all of the products they buy have an impact on the environment, including air quality.
No Idling: Young Lungs at Work
Students will participate in peer conferencing, develop a point of view regarding no idling of vehicles and create a public awareness campaign to encourage a no-idling policy on their campus.
Temperature Inversion
This lesson focuses on the formation mechanisms of temperature inversions, the effect of these inversions on pollution, some hazardous temperature inversion events around the world, and ways to minimize the effect of temperature inversions and pollution on human health.
