Elementary School
The following lesson plans are great for children in 1st through 5th grade.
To view the lesson plans, please register or log in. We've provided "Air Cleaning Power of Plants" for you to see before your register -- it's like "try it before you buy it!" (But ours are free!) Your registration information is used for evaluation and reporting purposes only -- your information is strictly protected.

1st Grade
Air Cleaning Power of Plants
Students will investigate the benefit of plants on air quality by walking around school grounds to observe plants, identifying the parts of a plant and discussing the role of plants and air.
Air Quality and Playing Outside
Students will distinguish between good air and bad air days and how the Air Quality Index can give us important information about the air.
Ready, Set, Stop Idling
Students learn what is good and bad for the air by watching a video clip, taking part in a card activity, acting like cars and drawing and writing about idling.
2nd Grade
Acid Rain
Students will discover how air pollution can make the air and water unsafe for plants and animals. Students will learn how acid rain can affect ecosystems and explore ways to reduce pollution in the air and acid rain.
An Unhealthy Raindrop
Students will find out how water moves through the water cycle and changes states by adding and releasing heat energy. Students will develop an understanding of how air pollution can make the air and water unsafe for plants and animals.
Have a Glass of Tea Made Using Solar Energy
Students investigate the sun as a source of light and heat energy and how energy from the sun (renewable energy) can be used to make tea. Students will develop an understanding of how pollutants in the air can make the air and water unsafe for plants and animals.
Make a Good Choice: Choose No Idling
By creating posters and t-shirts and reading a book, students explore how making good choices can help the environment while bad choices do the opposite.
3rd Grade
Idlers: Please Stop Your Engines
After collecting idling data at school for one week, students make graphs using the information and slogans for mock no-idling bumper stickers.
Please Do Not Make Us Cough, Turn Your Engine Off
Students complete graphic and writing organizers to prepare for a persuasive essay that educates and creates awareness about the harmful effects of idling and persuades others to stop idling.
Recycling and Making Paper
Students will find out how making recycled paper helps the environment including air quality. Students will investigate how paper is recycled and make their own recycled paper.
4th Grade
Climate Change
Students will learn about air pollution and the Greenhouse Effect through online investigation and an experiment in which they will record and graph temperatures.
5th Grade
Acid Rain and Measuring pH
Through a series of experiments with common liquids like coffee, vinegar and milk, students will measure acidity and test a water sample for pH.
Acid Rain and Destructive Processes
Students will test mineral samples to investigate the effects of chemical weathering caused by acid rain and investigate how acid rain is an agent of chemical weathering (a destructive force).
Green Vehicles
Students research new technologies to reduce vehicle emission and then create presentations to market those vehicles that feature their favorite air pollution solutions.
Six Infamous Air Pollutants
A mock press conference helps students learn and categorize each of the six major air pollutants.
Traffic Jams
Students explore how vehicles contribute to air pollution through the use of equations, data collection and graphing.
